Message from the Acting Head of Secondary School

Welcome to the Secondary School of the Australian International School.

The Secondary School covers Years 6 to 12.  In Years 6 to 10 our curriculum is based on the International Baccalaureate Organization Middle Years Programme (MYP).  In Years 11 and 12, students have the choice of studying either the Australian Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the IB Diploma Program (DP).  AIS is fully accredited by the IBO and is an IB World School.

Whilst the School’s priority is to deliver high quality academic programs that enable our students to achieve their intellectual potential, we also place equal emphasis on the affective side of each child’s education.

Our world is a challenging one, fraught with uncertainty and perpetual change.  We aim to equip our students with the skills and personal qualities that will enable them not only to flourish amid the complexities of today’s world, but also to make a difference for good in their generation.

Thus, we place emphasis on skills such as teamwork, inquiry and lifelong learning, information technology, critical thinking, and the development of personal qualities such as; respect, open-mindedness, understanding, empathy, caring, integrity, community, responsibility, balance, resilience, international mindedness, leadership and problem solving.  These skills and qualities are nurtured not only through the conduit of the taught curriculum, but also through the rich co-curricular opportunities offered by the School.  These include: camps, community service projects, sport programs and a variety of student leadership positions.

We also recognise that strong partnerships between the School and home enhance the quality of a student’s education.  Therefore, we encourage parents to participate in open dialogue with the School and to support this through attendance at the wide variety of meetings, activities and sporting events organised by the School.  Parents can also support their child by providing optimal conditions for students to complete their homework assignments and to develop independent learning skills.  To enable parents to better monitor their child’s progress at school, we are currently developing a new Virtual Learning Environment community portal through which key academic and welfare information can be accessed.

Our ambition is that our students gain the best possible future through maximising their academic potential and go on to influence our world for good.  To this end, as a school, we are committed to continually strive for excellence.
