These two prominent politicians shared something of their journeys through life to their current positions, and the challenges that they have confronted. Over 1,700 parents, students and staff descended on the main school oval to enjoy the sun, freshly fried Fish and Chips, followed by apple crumble and ice-cream. The children enjoyed face-painting, bouncy castles, a climbing wall, disco, tug of war and generally a big run around on the Oval. [Read the rest of this article...] ailsa_morrison posted on January 11, 2013 14:00 AIS congratulates its first cohort of IB DP graduates who achieved an average score of 34.4, over 4 points higher than the global average of 30 and a world class 100% pass rate, exceptional work considering that globally only 78% of students pass the DP and that this is the first IB DP cohort for AIS. In addition, 17% of the cohort achieved a score of over 40 and the average ATAR was an outstanding 92.5.

Art Express is a dynamic and popular exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the art-making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts, 2012. We are so very proud of our two students who were two of 200 students nominated from a cohort of roughly 10,000 students who study Visual Arts for the HSC.

Following the fifth and final Olympiad, individual student scores are collated and compared to the scores of other students competing in this competition, from schools across Australasia.
This year our team of Year 5 students achieved in the top 10 percent of teams that participated in this year’s Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad Competition, and as a result of this has been placed on the 2012 Awards Honour roll.

She presided over the event’s Opening Ceremony which saw the School’s 2,600 students join together on the School’s sports field, all resplendent in cultural dress representing the 49 different nationalities within the School. This is the first time the six Australian International schools have joined together to create a sporting carnival for their students, in what is set to become a permanent feature of the schools’ sporting calendars. Our staff presented three separate workshops, more than any other school at the conference.
AIS had the highest number of staff presenters in the workshops sessions out of any of the 500 plus attending schools, which is a great reflection of the talent we have in our staff community.

House Spirit was well and truly alive as the students danced the day away in the stands in between running and field events on both days and the participation from all students was great to see.

Our athletes will take up the challenge in a range of track and field events, as well as some novelty races – cheered on by the rest of their cohort, led by the House Cheering Squads and mascots. Students from Prep through to Year 9 filled the school gym to enjoy the energetic lion dance, which is performed to ensure good luck and fortune for the coming year.
The students were also treated to a dragon dance performance by the troupe, which was spectacular.

The central idea of their inquiry is Making and Keeping Friends is a Lifelong Skill and even this early on in the term, evidence of their exploration can be seen on campus.

AIS entered 2 teams (Kangaroos and Emus) in the 12U division and one team (Koalas) in the 9U division of this event last Saturday at the Ceylon Sports Club, which saw an all AIS final and an overall win for the Emus.
This competition is held each year to celebrate the life of Denis Meyer, a Singapore cricketing legend who sadly passed away in 2007. The Misfits Cricket Club organise this event each year to remember this great man.

Through their demonstration of a solid understanding of the concept of global citizenship and inquiry learning, both girls will receive a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees during the course of their IB Diploma Programme studies at AIS, which they will begin in January 2012.

The players spoke with AIS cricketers, boys and girls, about the importance of the concept of ‘team’ and how the School’s values of knowledge and respect transcend all areas of life, including sport.

The AIS 1:1 Laptop Program began in 2010 with Year 10 students being issued their own Dell Vostro laptop. Last week the 1:1 Laptop Program at AIS was expanded when Years 6 to 9 were also issued with their own laptops. Roy’s stories really connected with the students, and he was moved by the interest that the students had in his artworks. He enjoyed the engagement of student’s interest and communicated to them that if they are not connected to the land and the stories it has to tell, it will die.

This will be a great concert where our Brass ensemble and Combined AISS Choir and Primary Choir will perform along with the Band in the Coral Dixon Theatre. Tickets are on sale now from the Main Reception at just $10 per person so we hope our School community will come along and support this event.
It is a tradition as old as our school that an AISS Choir sings at the ANZAC day Dawn Service at the Kranji war memorial in Singapore. This year we will again be joined by the RANVB. The boys will join with 22 other players in the squad, some of whom will be selected to represent Singapore at the South East Asian Cricket Championship 2011, which will be held in Thailand in late April. They both made a significant contribution to the conference.

Our team did a fantastic job, with a large number of top places across all events and in all age groups. During his visit he spoke at length with our Middle School students, mentored Middle and Senior School staff and presented to 450 parents from our school community in the space of two days!
Dr Carr-Gregg was very impressed by what he found at AISS; responsive students, motivated staff and an engaged parent community so we will be looking to maintain contact with him, with a view to a follow-up visit in the future. Our Athletics Carnivals for Primary, Middle and Senior School have been held over the past two days, and were blessed (for a change) with good, if hot, weather. Staff were overwhelmed by the level of participation, and the spirit of all the students whether taking part in each event or in the stands cheering on their fellow Housemates. We ran out of time on both days to complete all events, so we can’t announce the House winners yet, but here are a few photos from the day. The Australian International School Singapore (AISS) today hosted a visit by the Governor-General of Australia, Her Excellency, Ms Quentin Bryce AC and her husband, His Excellency Mr Michael Bryce, AM, AE. The visit was an informal one, which was arranged at the request of Ms Bryce so she could see for herself some of the more recent building developments at the AISS campus. Ms Bryce was escorted on her visit by AISS Principal Mr Peter Bond, and School Captains Danilo Scodellaro and Jaclyn Stewart. The Governor-General and Mr Bryce toured a number of areas of the School, visiting the AISS Preschool to experience a cooking lesson and an obstacle course, followed by an informal reception with our Senior, Middle and Primary School captains in the Senior School. This was a major meet involving students from a large number of international schools from all over Singapore. Most of our competitive sports fixtures arise through our membership of ACSIS (Athletic Conference Singapore International Schools) and interested students are required to try out for a place on the respective squads. The results are a great cause for celebration with three Top Achievers and two All-rounders in our Year 12 cohort. 67 Distinguished Achievers awards were also given to AISS students for 2010, meaning that they scored Band 6 (90+) in a subject. 12% of our Year 12 HSC cohort achieved an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 95+ placing them in the top 5% of 2010 HSC candidates. Starting strongly, the AISS boys drove the ball to the LFS line and camped there for the best part of the first half. Sadly time ran out and AISS took the runner-up medals but all the boys walk away with heads high after an enormously successful and memorable year of rugby for this team.

Consistent performer Tiaan Fouche was named the tournament’s most valuable player; a significant award given the high standard of play throughout the tournament. Led by parents from our Wombat and Kangaroo classes, the children began the day creating diya, small clay lamps and rangoli, beautiful and highly colourful floor designs.
Our Wombat and Kangaroo mums organised a special Preschool assembly during which the children learnt about the legend of Deepavali and its celebration and the diya created by the children were lit to wish the Preschool success.

The MaD runners met early at the Padang on Halloween morning to join in the Great 10km or 5km individual run and the inaugural 5km Mother and Daughter (MaD) challenge. The event raised awareness about breast cancer and promoted women’s health.

The Personal Project is the culminating piece of work of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) on which Year 10 students have been working on throughout the year. It is a product of the students’ own initiative and reflects their experience of the MYP, especially the Areas of Interaction.
