This week students in Year 11 of the AIS Secondary School had the opportunity to take part in a dialogue with two prominent guest speakers, Ms Anna Burke, Speaker of the House of Representatives in Australia, and Madam Halimah Yacob, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore. 

These two prominent politicians shared something of their journeys through life to their current positions, and the challenges that they have confronted. Their message was one of application and passion to achieve.

Olympic medal winner, five times World Champion, eight times World Record holder; Australian swimmer Geoff Huegill will visit AIS next week to guest-coach our Sharks Swim Squad and speak to students about being a professional athlete and what it takes to achieve your dreams.  

As part of his visit, AIS is proud to present ‘An Evening with Geoff Huegill’ to give parents, staff and the wider community a chance to meet Geoff and hear, first-hand, about is sporting career, the highs and the lows.

Our AISA Games teams set off for KL last week to compete in the Australian International Schools’ Asia Games – a competition set up last year to allow Australian Schools in the region to compete against each other in a number of different sports.

After competing in Touch (Boys and Girls), Netball and Swimming, AIS Singapore finished 2nd overall to Hong Kong. Congratulations to all students and coaches on a successful tour.

AIS is proud to have been asked by the recently appointed Australian High Commissioner to Singapore to host an opportunity for him to meet parents and staff from the AIS Community.

His Excellence, Mr Philip Green, will be with us on Tuesday, 7 May at 7pm for an evening of conversation, wine and cheese.

In what is a firm tradition at AIS, the Parents' Association hosted the AISPA Annual Fish and Chips night on Saturday, 20 April.

Over 1,700 parents, students and staff descended on the main school oval to enjoy the sun, freshly fried Fish and Chips, followed by apple crumble and ice-cream. 

The children enjoyed face-painting, bouncy castles, a climbing wall, disco, tug of war and generally a big run around on the Oval.

Thanks to AISPA for running such an amazing community event - we all had a ball!

AIS congratulates its first cohort of IB DP graduates who achieved an average score of 34.4, over 4 points higher than the global average of 30 and a world class 100% pass rate, exceptional work considering that globally only 78% of students pass the DP and that this is the first IB DP cohort for AIS.  

In addition, 17% of the cohort achieved a score of over 40 and the average ATAR was an outstanding 92.5.

The AIS art department recently received the wonderful news that Ezra Comte and Matthias Law, both Year 12 students, have been nominated for Art Express.  

Art Express is a dynamic and popular exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the art-making component of the HSC examination in Visual Arts, 2012. We are so very proud of our two students who were two of 200  students nominated from a cohort of roughly 10,000 students who study Visual Arts for the HSC.

Each year teams of students are selected to participate in this competition which consists of five separate Olympiads throughout the year. Following the fifth and final Olympiad, individual student scores are collated and compared to the scores of other students competing in this competition, from schools across Australasia. 

This year our team of Year 5 students achieved in the top 10 percent of teams that participated in this year’s Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad Competition, and as a result of this has been placed on the 2012 Awards Honour roll.

The Australian International School is pleased to announce the introduction of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum from January 2013. The 2013 Year 9 cohort will be the first AIS students to study this curriculum.

In a realisation of an autobiographical narrative as a musical, East meets West in a richly textured and stirring tale for Rogers and Hammerstein that has generated fond fascination for the last 60 years. 

It tells of a widowed English schoolteacher who is called to Siam along with her young son, in 1862 by King Monghut to teach his 67 children western, “scientific” ways.

The Acting Australian High Commissioner, Julie Heckscher visited the Australian International School (AIS) in Singapore on Wednesday, 13 June to officially open ICE – the International Cultural Experience.

She presided over the event’s Opening Ceremony which saw the School’s 2,600 students join together on the School’s sports field, all resplendent in cultural dress representing the 49 different nationalities within the School. Every student enjoyed the excitement of coming to school dressed up and outfits ranged from a very British top hat and tails complete with monocle, to a German milkmaid and the Secondary School’s voted favorite- a Japanese Ninja.

The Australian International School (AIS) in Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Australian International Schools Association (AISA) Games this coming weekend (Friday, 8 and Saturday, 9 June), bringing together 250 students from six Asian countries and schools.

This is the first time the six Australian International schools have joined together to create a sporting carnival for their students, in what is set to become a permanent feature of the schools’ sporting calendars. The students, who are aged between 11 and 18 will compete in three sports; soccer, basketball and swimming over a two-day programme.

Our 2011 Year 12 HSC students maintained the excellent standard we have come to expect from them in the New South Wales Higher School Certificate examinations:

• 23 students achieved grades in Band 6 or above (90+) in one or more subjects

• 11% of AIS candidates were ranked in the top 6% of HSC students.

• For the second year in a row, an AIS student achieved a 1st place in HSC Chinese Extension

Last weekend, Senior Leaders from AIS attended the IBO Asia Pacific Conference held here in Singapore.  Our staff presented three separate workshops, more than any other school at the conference. 

AIS had the highest number of staff presenters in the workshops sessions out of any of the 500 plus attending schools, which is a great reflection of the talent we have in our staff community.

The 19th Annual House Athletics Carnivals came and went in the blink of an eye. House Spirit was well and truly alive as the students danced the day away in the stands in between running and field events on both days and the participation from all students was great to see.

This coming Thursday and Friday will see the whole of the Primary and Secondary Schools go head to head to represent their respective houses at the Annual Primary and Secondary Athletics Carnivals.

Our athletes will take up the challenge in a range of track and field events, as well as some novelty races – cheered on by the rest of their cohort, led by the House Cheering Squads and mascots.  The two events are a fantastic display of school spirit with all students having a go and achieving their personal bests.

Early this morning, the AIS Year 5 Choir and accompanying staff set off for the Kranji War Cemetery to take part in the Commemoration Service of the 70th Anniversary of the fall of Singapore.

A sombre yet moving occasion, the ceremony is organised each year by the Australian Department of Veterans’ Affairs to mark the day Singapore fell to the Japanese  Army on 15 February 1942.

AIS welcomed in the Year of the Dragon this morning with the help of a local lion-dance troupe.  Students from Prep through to Year 9 filled the school gym to enjoy the energetic lion dance, which is performed to ensure good luck and fortune for the coming year.  

The students were also treated to a dragon dance performance by the troupe, which was spectacular.

At AIS this term, our Year 1 students have begun exploring their first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are.  

The central idea of their inquiry is Making and Keeping Friends is a Lifelong Skill and even this early on in the term, evidence of their exploration can be seen on campus.

Congratulations to AIS student Amanda Sim, who has just learnt that she achieved the first place in the NSW HSC Chinese Extension Course.

This is the second year in a row an AIS student has achieved first place in the NSW HSC Chinese Extension course.

This week AIS has to say goodbye to its current Principal, Peter Bond, following 10 years in the role. 

As part of a number of events and assemblies planned this week by various parts of the School to say goodbye to Peter, the whole school turned out early this morning to share a high-five with AIS’ second and longest serving Principal.

Peter walked through a tunnel of students to a large round of applause, ending up on the School oval for an historic group shot with the whole 2011 cohort and staff.

For the third year running AIS has won the 12U division of the Denis Meyer Sixes. AIS entered 2 teams (Kangaroos and Emus) in the 12U division and one team (Koalas) in the 9U division of this event last Saturday at the Ceylon Sports Club, which saw an all AIS final and an overall win for the Emus.

This competition is held each year to celebrate the life of Denis Meyer, a Singapore cricketing legend who sadly passed away in 2007. The Misfits Cricket Club organise this event each year to remember this great man.

The Junior School was a blaze of colour and style last week as we held our annual UN Parade of Nations. 

After a wonderful presentation by the children of the Junior Choir and Orchestra, each year level made their way around the soccer field in single file before assembling under the white marquee erected specially for the event.

AIS are the winners of this year's ACSIS U14 Rugby Tournament, after a strongly contested round of matches

AIS hosted this year’s ACSIS Rugby Tournament on Saturday, 15 October, where five schools competed for the U14 Championship Trophy. The boys anticipated all four games would be very competitive, but manged to finish the tournament undefeated with 3 wins and a draw, scoring 60 points and conceding nil.

Beth Posney and Jessica Orchard are the proud recipients of the inaugural AIS Global Citizen Scholarships. 

Through their demonstration of a solid understanding of the concept of global citizenship and inquiry learning, both girls will receive a 50 percent reduction in tuition fees during the course of their IB Diploma Programme studies at AIS, which they will begin in January 2012.

Giving a 10-minute conference presentation on the theme of leadership to over 500 school principals from IB schools around the world is a daunting prospect for any teacher or school leader. Imagine how much more of a challenge that task would be if you were 15-years old.

But that’s exactly the challenge AIS Year 10 student Jefferson Spratt rose to this morning as he spoke at the IB Heads World Conference.

This week saw the culmination of months of hard work from our Year 10 students with the showcase of their Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Projects.  Each was a unique exploration into an area that interested them, with some really exciting, colourful and diverse results. 

The grades for this year’s Projects have just been released, with 64% of the cohort achieving a grade between 5 and 7.

This year’s Annual Art Exhibition, SetUpArt was a resounding success. There was a great turn out on opening night with a constant flow of students, staff, parents, and other schools visiting throughout the following days.

AIS Princpal, Mr Peter Bond, opened the exhibition praising the students, commending them on their ability to reflect on the world in which they live with such maturity, and the high caliber of the works he sees year after year from this department in general. “The best art gallery he has visited anywhere in the world!”.

AIS celebrated its Foundation Day today, marking its 18th year as an international school in Singapore.

From humble beginnings with just 32 students and 7 teachers in 1993, AIS has expanded massively over the last 18 years, changing campus four times and growing into a community of over 2,500 students and over 200 teaching staff.

Shireen and Jonathan will lead a team of 12 Captains who represent the whole school and are role models for its vision and values.

Our young cricketers were fortunate enough to be visited by two of Australia’s cricketing greats today, Matthew Hayden and Michael Kasprowicz, who were in Singapore as part of the Macquarie Sports Cricket Program.

The players spoke with AIS cricketers, boys and girls, about the importance of the concept of ‘team’ and how the School’s values of knowledge and respect transcend all areas of life, including sport.

AIS’ Senior School Visual arts students were privileged to be visited by the Australian artist Jasper Knight today. 

Jasper Knight, who in 2005, 2006 and 2007 was a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize, gave an inspirational talk to a captivated audience about his approaches to art making, his influences and motivation.

His work is currently on show at the Australian High Commission.

Year 10 and 11 Drama students enjoyed a theatrical spectacle last Thursday night when they attended The Paper Boat at The Esplanade Theatre. 

This multimedia performance was a sensory exploration which started with students constructing paper boats and culminated in a rich performance exploring the complexities of dreams, desires and journeys.

The Career Focus Day is one of the many opportunities throughout the year for our young adults to learn more about their options once their secondary school education is complete, and follows on from a series of profession-specific workshops and lectures that have already taken place this year.

The AIS Under 15 Cricket squad were very fortunate to have Rhett Lockyear (Tasmanian Sheffield Shield/One Day & newly formed Hobart Hurricanes Twenty20 Big bash top order batsman) attend their first training session of the season on Monday afternoon at the newly resurfaced AIS cricket nets. 

He shared his wisdom with the AIS U15 boys stressing the importance of sense of team, commitment and mateship.  These wise words will be the key to our U15 team’s fortunes this coming Howzat season.

Last week saw the completion of the roll out of the Middle School 1:1 Laptop program, much to the delight of our students who were all very excited to take ownership of their very own computers. 

The AIS 1:1 Laptop Program began in 2010 with Year 10 students being issued their own Dell Vostro laptop. Last week the 1:1 Laptop Program at AIS was expanded when Years 6 to 9 were also issued with their own laptops. By the start of the 2012 academic year, every student from Year 6 to Year 12 will be part of the AIS 1:1 Laptop Program.

AIS Year 12 Visual Arts were luckly enough to host a visit by one of Australia's most collectable Aboriginal artists, Roy Wiggna, who came to speak to them about his artworks.

Roy’s stories really connected with the students, and he was moved by the interest that the students had in his artworks. He enjoyed the engagement of student’s interest and communicated to them that if they are not connected to the land and the stories it has to tell, it will die.

Every year, the AIS Preschool holds a Family Picnic.  As well as being a day where our Preschoolers can show off their classrooms (and singing talents), the Picnic is a chance for Mums and Dads, and extended family, to join together and share some precious time as a family.

Final rehearsals are well underway for the 2011 School Production of The Canterbury Tales, with only two weeks to go before curtain up.

Our cast of 44 enthusiastic students from Years 6-11 are ready to showcase their talents in this production of love, deceit, murder and revenge.  All they need now is an appreciative audience!

The show runs from Wednesday, 1 June and until Saturday, 4 June - tickets are on sale from main reception at a cost of $10 per person.

Over the recent holiday, two AIS cricket squads had tours to Malaysia. In total, AIS won 3 out the 4 games played, which was a great result.

Thursday, 21 April the Royal Australian Navy Veterans Band will present an evening of Australiana, Movie Themes, Variety and Military music.  This will be a great concert where our Brass ensemble and Combined AISS Choir and Primary Choir will perform along with the Band in the Coral Dixon Theatre.  Tickets are on sale now from the Main Reception at just $10 per person so we hope our School community will come along and support this event.

It is a tradition as old as our school that an AISS Choir sings at the ANZAC day Dawn Service at the Kranji war memorial in Singapore. This year we will again be joined by the RANVB.

It is with great pleasure that AISS recognises Keegan Roberts and Aidan Rath for being selected to play in the Singapore National Cricket 14U Squad.

The boys will join with 22 other players in the squad, some of whom will be selected to represent Singapore at the South East Asian Cricket Championship 2011, which will be held in Thailand in late April.

Last week, two senior students, Nikita Ash and Elise Blume, were actively involved at the annual SIMUN conference at the French school. They both made a significant contribution to the conference.

Nikita co-chaired the Security Council and Elise ended up being awarded best delegate of the Security Council.

Last weekend a group of Primary athletes from AISS represented the School at the ACSIS International Primary Athletics Carnival. 

Our team did a fantastic job, with a large number of top places across all events and in all age groups.  In fact, our guys did so well that the girls and boys teams won the overall school team competition, with 322 and 296 points respectively.

We were incredibly lucky last week to have the pleasure to host a visit to AISS by leading adolescent expert and psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. During his visit he spoke at length with our Middle School students, mentored Middle and Senior School staff and presented to 450 parents from our school community in the space of two days!

Dr Carr-Gregg was very impressed by what he found at AISS; responsive students, motivated staff and an engaged parent community so we will be looking to maintain contact with him, with a view to a follow-up visit in the future.

All this week, we will be celebrating the wealth of nationalities we have at AISS to mark International Mother Language Day.  We currently have 40 nationalities represented in our student body – of course it will come as no surprise that Australians come top, but did you know we also have students from countries as diverse as Mexico, Norway, the Ukraine and Fiji. 

Activities planned this week include students, teachers and parents reading stories and poems or sharing songs in their mother language.

Kicking off our sporting year, details have been released today for the 2011 Primary and Middle / Senior Athletics Carnivals.  All students in Years 3 to 12 take part in a range of athletic disciplines earning individual points for the age championships or for their respective houses.  Both events are not only great shows of athletic talent but also spirit and determination.

The Middle / Senior School event takes place on Thursday, 24 February, with the Primary School event the following day, Friday, 25 February.

Trials for places on our Representative Sports teams continue next week. Most of our competitive sports fixtures arise through our membership of ACSIS (Athletic Conference Singapore International Schools) and interested students are required to try out for a place on the respective squads.

Squads have already been finalised for a number of sports in this week's trials; U11 Cricket, U13 Cricket, 14U Girls Soccer, 16U Rugby, 19U Rugby, 12U Tennis, 14U Tennis, 19U Boys and Girls Badminton, 14U Badminton and 10U Netball. However, we are still looking for squad members for a number of sports so we look forward to seeing many of our students try out next week.

The AISS Preschool was buzzing today with Australian flags, iconic images and vegemite sandwiches as our 10 classes of 3 and 4 year olds celebrated Australia’s birthday. 

Each class spent the morning making and decorating hats and badges that were then worn with pride at the Australia Day assembly.  Guest of honor, Acting Deputy Principal Mr David Smith was encouraged to taste one of the vegemite sandwiches, and gave it a big thumbs up!

The online system for selecting a Cocurricular Activity for Semester 1, 2011 opened on Friday, 21 January.  The Sport and Enrichment program consists of a wide range of sports, arts and creative activities that complement the classroom-based School curriculum. Students are encouraged to participate in the program to broaden their interests and develop skills. Parents are requested to enrol their child / children using the online SharePoint portal to avoid disappointment.

As part of the wider Sport and Enrichment program at AISS, our students can undertake a wide range of sports from scuba diving and rock climbing to five-aside football and touch rugby.  These are split into two areas - Participative Sport, which are open to everyone (subject to age requirements) and Representative Sport, for which students are required to attend selection trials.

Congratulations go to our graduating Year 12 students for their outstanding HSC results this year. The results are a great cause for celebration with three Top Achievers and two All-rounders in our Year 12 cohort.  67 Distinguished Achievers awards were also given to AISS students for 2010, meaning that they scored Band 6 (90+) in a subject.

12% of our Year 12 HSC cohort achieved an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 95+ placing them in the top 5% of 2010 HSC candidates.

The 16U Rugby squad contested the last competitive sporting fixture of 2010 when they faced off against perennial rivals Lycee Francais de Singapour (LFS). Starting strongly, the AISS boys drove the ball to the LFS line and camped there for the best part of the first half. Sadly time ran out and AISS took the runner-up medals but all the boys walk away with heads high after an enormously successful and memorable year of rugby for this team.

Our congratulations to Year 12 student Guo Cheng Ho who it was announced today achieved a fantastic first place in two New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC) subjects, Chinese Continuers and Chinese Extension. 

This is a wonderful achievement for Guo Cheng and all the AISS Language staff who have worked with him. We expect more positive news as the rest of the HSC results come in later this week.

Three AISS Year 7 students Will Evans, Jun Yup Lee and Aidan Rath have scooped a top prize in the Australian National 60 Second Science Video Competition 2010 for their video Acceleration / Deceleration. 

A total of 148 videos were entered in the Senior School category and our boys beat all other New South Wales entrants to win the top prize for NSW.

We wish the staff and students of the AISS Nepal School for Schools team a hearty bon voyage on the eve of their departure.  They have worked tirelessly over the past year to raise awareness, and donations, for the schools in the remote Solu Khumbu area of Nepal that are supported by the AISS community.

In addition to the amazing financial donation of $60,000 the team has raised, they will also be taking with them a donation of 7,000 pairs of new and second hand shoes to distribute to the community.

Students of the AISS Rock Band CCA raised the roof (at least it felt like that!) in their second International Day of Rock event.  Having graduated from performing in the Middle School Pod, the event drew a massive Middle and Senior School lunch-time crowd, filling the theatre and leaving standing room only.

The Rock Band CCA is enthusiastically lead by Middle School’s David Schneer and Richard Kosh in the Senior School.  This CCA is a chance for students to develop their music skills and practice performing in a band.

Last week AISS Preschoolers were treated to the delights of the Year 9 Drama Children’s Theatre performances.  In this unit, Year 9 students explore the power of theatre as a tool for education.  They don’t just make a dramatic performance, they get to sample the impact of their efforts on a real audience of 3 and 4 year olds.

It was a wonderful experience for all involved and a pleasure to share within the School community.

Playing some outstanding rugby, the AISS Under 16 Sevens Rugby team have claimed the esteemed title of St Andrew’s Schools Sevens Rugby Champions, beating the home side in the final match 17-10.

Consistent performer Tiaan Fouche was named the tournament’s most valuable player; a significant award given the high standard of play throughout the tournament.

The AISS Under 14 Sevens Rugby team also made it to the semi-finals in the same tournament, and were awarded the Fair Play Trophy for their solid, entertaining yet respectful play.

The AISS 9 and Under Cricket Sixes Team won the annual Denis Meyer Cricket Sixes Tournament on Saturday, 13 November. 

This tournament is held annually at the Ceylon Sports Club and organised by the Misfits Cricket Team in honour of the late cricketing legend of Singapore Denis Meyer.

 It is a reflection on the depth of cricketing talent at the School that we have won this tournament for the past 2 years.

Earlier this week, nine of the Australian International School Singapore’s brightest aspiring Middle School mathematicians represented the School at the Singapore International Schools Maths Competition (SISMC).  The competition is held annually between international Schools here in Singapore, with the students grouped in teams of three (18 teams in all).

One of the AISS teams placed a fantastic 3rd out of 18 teams, with one student also placing 3rd in the individual competition out of 54 participants.

Preschoolers at AISS celebrated the Hindu festival of lights yesterday with a riot of colour.  

Led by parents from our Wombat and Kangaroo classes, the children began the day creating diya, small clay lamps and rangoli, beautiful and highly colourful floor designs.

Our Wombat and Kangaroo mums organised a special Preschool assembly during which the children learnt about the legend of Deepavali and its celebration and the diya created by the children were lit to wish the Preschool success.

The 2nd Annual Primary Years Programme Exhibition opened at AISS on Tuesday this week. 

The Exhibition,under the transdiciplinary theme of Who We Are, is the culmination of 8 week’s work for our Year 5 cohort, in which they explored the central idea of how Our understanding of how we belong changes and is influenced by many factors

Accompanying the PYP Exhibition is the Primary School Art Exhibition, which is currently decorating the corridors walls of the Primary School.

A motivated mother and teacher (Louise Aitken) and her daughter (Sophie) challenged a group of around 100 mothers, teachers and students to go running in the annual Great Eastern Women’s run last weekend.  

The MaD runners met early at the Padang on Halloween morning to join in the Great 10km or 5km individual run and the inaugural 5km Mother and Daughter (MaD) challenge.  The event raised awareness about breast cancer and promoted women’s health.

“Visitors” from all over the world flew into the AISS Junior School today, to mark United Nations Week.  The Junior Sports Oval was a riot of colour as our young visitors showed off their fabulous costumes, and delighted everyone with a message of peace.

The UN Parade is the culmination of the children’s exploration of the United Nations and UNICEF, and enhances our efforts to embed in our school philosophy the importance of intercultural understanding and respect as a key to developing a more tolerant and peaceful world.

A contingent of Middle and Primary School althetes from AISS achieved great success this week competing in the ACSIS Senior and Junior Interschools Cross Country.

All of our runners performed impeccably, with many attaining a high placing, including a great  number of top 3's for their events over both days.

The biggest event on the Preschool calendar was officially opened on Friday, October 22 2010.  The Preschool’s annual exhibition, Exhibition of the Arts, showcases our students’ visual arts’ work.  This year’s theme touched on Biodiversity, and was titled “Expressions of Life”. 

The evening of the Official Opening saw more than 300 parents, friends and family throng the Preschool, perusing the original (and very creative) art work of the Preschool’s 285 students while being entertained by AISS’s own brass ensemble and string quartet music students.

The Australian International School Singapore (AISS) is pleased to announce that it has received official accreditation to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) in its Senior School from 2011.  

This announcement comes on the back of a lengthy accreditation process and means that the School is now one of only a handful of international schools in Singapore to offer all three IB programmes.

AISS Middle School was transformed into our very own Museum this week thanks to the imagination and hard work of our Year 7 cohort. 

Classrooms were transformed into areas representing Ancient Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Spartan and Aztec Civilisations as the culmination of 10 weeks of work.

Electric guitars, computer animations, model helicopters, works of art, fundraising projects for Cambodian house building, musical compositions and eco-friendly fashion items were just some of the products displayed by the Year 10 students at the MYP Personal Project showcase last week.

The Personal Project is the culminating piece of work of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) on which Year 10 students have been working on throughout the year. It is a product of the students’ own initiative and reflects their experience of the MYP, especially the Areas of Interaction. Critically, the Project also encourages students to use initiative and show responsibility to their own learning process.

The AISS School Captains for 2010 / 2011 were formally announced today with the top jobs of School Captain going to Danilo Scodellaro and Jaclyn Stewart.

Dan and Jaclyn will lead a team of 12 Captains in what is the pinnacle of student leadership within the School. As School Captains they represent the whole school and are role models for its vision and values.

Congratulations to this group of young AISS cricketers who have enjoyed an undefeated season of cricket winning both the ACSIS International Schools Competition and most recently the Singapore Cricket Association Inter Schools Tournament for 2010.

They have defeated all other international schools in the process, and local players and teams in the SCA Tournament. Jackson Anstee received the additional honor of being named SCA Bowler of the Series.

Last Friday students from the AISS Junior and Primary schools completed a walkathon around the Singapore Zoo.  

The purpose of the walkathon was to raise money to continue the School’s sponsorship of Banjo the orang-utan. The School has been a proud supporter of the Singapore Zoo’s orang-utan program for ten years.

Fifty AISS students were invited to meet the 150 strong Australian Youth Olympic Games team last Friday.

Hosted by the Anglo Chinese School, the welcome Reception for the Australian athletes was organised by the Australian High Commission. The official welcome included the introduction of the Australian team and the banners were paraded from the sports they represented.

The topic of Myths and Legends came to life for our Year 4 cohort recently through an interactive presentation from Telstra Award-winning Aboriginal artist Wukun Wanambi.  The year group has been inquiring into different cultures, specifically looking at the different ways people express their cultural ideas, as part of their current PYP Unit of Inquiry “How we express ourselves”.

The Australian Mathematics Challenge is a prestigious competition that Extension Mathematics students in Years 7 and 8 take part in. They attempt the Junior Challenge which involves solving six problems in three weeks. These problems require the students to use various strategies and present their solutions in a clear and logical format.

AISS is pleased to announce the opening of its new state of the art Middle and Senior School Technology Centre, located on the ground floor of the main school building.  The Technology Centre, which was completed over the holidays, will allow Middle and Senior students to fully extend their studies in Technology in this dedicated area.

AISS was a mass of colours and tantalizing smells on Wednesday 16 June 2010 as students, parents and staff came together to celebrate and appreciate our School’s amazing cultural diversity with an International Food Festival and Showcase.

Organized by our Senior School Captains, this was the School’s 11th year of celebrations, and neither the food nor standard of performances that followed disappointed.

This year marked the 50^th anniversary of the stage musical Oliver! It also marks the year the Australian International School’s Performing Arts Department took on the challenge of staging a musical with a cast and orchestra made up of talented student actors and musicians.

The AISS 12 and Under Cricket Team recently competed in the annual ACSIS cricket competition against three teams from United World College (A, B and East), two teams from Tanglin Trust School, and one each from the Overseas Family School and Combined Schools.
The AISS team won every pool match by either 9 or 10 wickets, or more than 90 runs.....

Current figures show that 1 in 20 Australian children have an allergy, with 1 in 200 at risk of life-threatening Anaphylaxis.  Over 40 children at AISS are at risk of Anaphylaxis and so it is an issue that everyone at the school takes seriously.

To mark the Australian Food Allergy Awareness Week, the AISS Allergy & Anaphylaxis Support Group will be manning a stand near the Junior School Canteen daily from 2.30 to 4 pm to provide the whole school community, students and parents alike, with information and advice.........

Senior School students have moved into the new Senior Wing of the AISS campus at Lorong Chuan. The Senior Wing is central to the whole AISS campus with visual connections to the Middle, Primary and Junior campuses.

A contemporary design with wide corridors and large open spaces, the Senior Wing is a comfortable and productive place for students to study and attend classes.

Term One saw the running of both the Primary and Middle/Senior athletics carnivals at Serangoon stadium. Derwent House took out honours in the Middle/Senior carnival by 900 points to Fitzroy House and in Primary Derwent House was 400 points ahead of its closest rival, Murray House.

The 2009 graduating class at AISS can be very proud of the HSC results that were announced during the holidays. Over 20% of the Year 12 cohort received an ATAR score of over 90 with two students making the NSW Merit List by receiving a Band 6 in every subject and two students receiving a Top Achiever award.

Students from Year 7 entered a national Science competition hosted by the ABC Network in Australia recently. Two groups of students were Runners-up with their innovative videos. Abbi Stanley, Ebony Matotek & Anna Klein were National Runners-Up with their presentation on buoyancy while Ricky Van Onselen, Patrick McGovern & Andrew Robinson placed as the Runners-Up in the State with their video on electromagnetism.
