The topic of Myths and Legends came to life for our Year 4 cohort recently through an interactive presentation from Telstra Award-winning Aboriginal artist Wukun Wanambi. The year group has been inquiring into different cultures, specifically looking at the different ways people express their cultural ideas, as part of their current PYP Unit of Inquiry “How we express ourselves”.
Wukun spoke at length to the whole year group about Indigenous myths and legends and the telling of stories through the arts, demonstrating traditional symbols and how they relate to both his people and their land. He represents his work on bark and poles from Arnhem Land, with a strong use of the fish, gathering rock and river motifs.
Wuken also ran a workshop for class 4K, during which the students learnt about medium, story and representation and how to work with ochres brought over from Australia, painting a real story, taught by a real artist.
Wukun was accompanied by Art Coordinator Will Stubbs from the Yirrkala Art Centre in Arnhem Land, Australia. This is a well established art centre east of Darwin. The Redot Gallery in Singapore is hosting an exhibition of works, including those from the Yirrkala Arts community, throughout August.
