Canteen Menu

In 2010, the AIS Parents’ Association presented to the School and representatives of the Canteen Service Providers concerns from parents and students as to the variety and balance of foods offered to our students at school.  AIS is committed to building an understanding within our student body of the importance of a healthy, balanced diet and so with the prospect of a new canteen facility coming online for the Primary, Middle and Senior Schools, it was time to review our canteen service provision and incorporate improvements where possible.

With the help of the AIS Parents’ Association, a subcommittee of parents and staff has met weekly throughout the past term. The input of our parent representatives has been invaluable, highly positive and productive.  Our Canteen Service Provider, Howe Catering, has also been receptive to new ideas and menu items, incorporating suggestions and changes the subcommittee has recommended in conjunction with the Healthy School Canteen Guidelines from various Australian States (Traffic lights etc).

Through discussion we concluded that we needed to focus on availability, variety and quality, providing food for our students that offers them healthy and balanced choices.  Our new menu provides rotating daily Western, Asian, vegetarian, salad, sandwich and dessert choices as well as a wide range of standard breakfast, main course, sandwich, fruit / dessert and snack options that will be available each and every day.  Carbonated drinks and traditional “junk foods” have mostly been removed from the menu at the encouragement of our parent body.  The nutritional content of many of those that remain, like pizzas for example, have been improved significantly.

The process of updating and maintaining our new School Canteen Menu is by no means at an end; our subcommittee will continue to meet regularly to review our progress and address any further changes that may be necessary.  They will also continue to look into ways that we can make our Canteen greener, with the introduction of recyclable and biodegradable packing and materials. AISS has appointed for the first time a Canteen Supervisor who will provide a link between the School, the Canteen provider, the subcommittee and our students, monitoring the preparation, production and presentation of menu choices on a daily basis.

We hope both our parents and students will be pleased with our School Canteen Menu but we also want to hear from you if you have any further suggestions for improvements. Please contact either aisspa@ais.com.sg or damian_ferguson@ais.com.sg with any comments.
