AISS Ensemble 1
AISS Ensembles aim is to give opportunities to beginning music students to participate and perform in an ensemble.
AWWA - Special Needs Child Care Volunteer
SMILES is an after school facility for disabled students run by a non profit organisation in Singapore. AISS students are actively engaged in the care of these students, as well as assisting with activities such as games, crafts and homework help where possible.
Through our association with Asian Women Welfare Association (AWWA) AISS students gain an understanding of children with intellectual and physical disabilities and their needs.
Chinese Chess
This CCA is designed to introduce students to a favourite Chinese pastime. For new students it aims to provide an understanding of the game and for students who have already experienced this game, it is an opportunity to sharpen their skills and strategies.
Concert Choir
Concert Choir is open to any student or staff member who loves to sing. It is helpful to be able to read simple music notation but this is not necessary. The Choir sings a wide range of
music from Mozart to Broadway and beyond. Some extra rehearsal may be called before important performances.
Concert Band
Concert Band will be directed by Mr Hughes and Mr Elliot. It will consist of primary and high school students who have had at least one year of tuition on their instrument. An exciting range of repertoire, including Jazz and Rock charts will be studies and performed at school occasions.
Concordis
Concordis will encorporate Senior Strings and include other advanced and gifted music students in a flexible ensemble playing challenging repertoire and work on special projects such as the school production.
Cooking - International
This CCA is designed to introduce students to simple culinary skills through the preparation of basic sweets and snacks such as pizzas and biscuits. Menu planning, shopping list preparations and general catering principles are covered. At the end of each session, they also learn how to wash up!
Dance
This is a new CCA for Semester 2. The style of dance is still to be decided however it will revolve around modern choreography.
Debating
An interesting and challenging co-curricular activity, debating offers students the opportunity to enhance their verbal communication abilities. They are also able to meet students from other schools in friendly, though tough competition on Friday afternoons.
Digital Imaging
This CCA is only open to Years 9-12. It will run on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30pm in AR1. There is no cost to attend, but if you wish to print that will be at your own expense. It is not necessary to have a digital camera, but an advantage if you have your own.
If you chose this CCA you will be investigating the world around you through the creative use of a digital camera. Each week you will work on extending the opportunities provided by current technology in software applications such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro, and add-ons such as Flickr. Using our world around you as inspiration, your will be given inspiration for your subject matter and be guided on how to get the most out of your digital camera and the post production options. If circumstances and the opportunities arise, public photographic competitions will be used as a focus for investigations to allow for entry into these as they arise.
Homework Centre
The Homework Centre allows secondary students to bring their homework tasks to the club and access teacher assistance. Guest teachers will sometimes come to give specialist subject tuition. Students will be grouped according to subjects and will also assist each other. The assessment calendars will be referred to for all years in order to monitor student assessment submissions.
Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is the use of water to revitalize, maintain, and restore health. Hydrotherapy sessions at AWWA involve our AISS students getting into a heated pool to help and interact with disabled students in their hydrotherapy sessions. It’s an opportunity for our students to demonstrate their appreciation and respect for others less fortunate than themselves. As one student said, “It makes the children happy to have us play with them, but we leave with the biggest smile.”
Japanese Language/Culture Group
The Japanese Language/Culture Group CCA is aimed at students who are interested in learning the Japanese language and aspects of both pop culture and traditional culture. It is a way that our students can make contact with the Japanese community in Singapore and abroad.
Middle School Strings Ensemble
The Middle Strings are a group of about 15 string players of varied abilities. We aim to perform at least once a term, either in assemblies or special events such as Foundation Day, Recital Nights, Presentation Day and Carols by Torchlight.
Apart from having lots of fun playing together with other people, we also aim to improve the following skills;
* Following a conductor
* Improve note reading ability
* Learning to listen to other parts and knowing when to play softly
* Keeping an accurate tempo
* Playing with accurate intonation
* Learning to lead a section when necessary
From time to time there will be a need for extra rehearsals for some of these special events, however the students will usually be given a note with the relevant details in this regard.
Model United Nations
Prerequisites: Debating experience
Model United Nations is a challenging simulation of the United Nations. Students represent a particular country and debate issues of global and national significance on behalf of that country.
AISS students are involved in two MUN competitions with other schools in Singapore over the year.
Mount Elizabeth Hospital Cancer Ward Activities
This CCA gives students an opportunity to engage with young people who are hospitalised for a long period. Students travel with a teacher to the hospital by taxi and spend about an hour playing games, chatting and generally having fun with other young people. The visits are very much appreciated and our students gain a real sense of joy from helping others. Students are expected to make their own way home at 5.00pm.
Mural Painting
The mural CCA provides students with an opportunity to design and paint large scale murals to be located in stairwells and corridors as part of the schools’ beautification program. There will be no costs involved for students. The art lessons provide an opportunity for senior students to develop their practical skills. The demands on seniors’ time, the interruption to their program by public holidays and other school events means that continuity of practice is not always possible. CCA is a down time, a time to relax out of the lesson structure. The session also provides opportunities to interact with other senior students interested in developing their Body of Works. With smaller numbers than normal class sizes, students are able to spread out across a few art rooms. The session provides more personal tuition in a relaxed atmosphere. Occasionally students are able to go as a group after school to artistic events.
National Youth Achievement Award
The aim of the NYAA Scheme is to encourage young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years to develop personal qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and a sense of responsibility to themselves, to society and to the nation.
The criteria for an award are those of self-improvement and effort. The participant is judged on personal achievement measured against original circumstances and potential capabilities. This allows for the less able and disadvantaged to participate on an equal opportunity basis
There are three levels of the Award - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level requires a greater degree of commitment and determination.
Each participant has until his or her 25th birthday to complete the programme.

A community service, this involves AISS students training for and then leading riding, for disabled students as part of their therapy session. This will occur at a time allocated to us by the organisation, one afternoon a week.
Save the Planet Action Heroes
Global warming, melting polar caps, animal and species extinction, and rapidly declining habitats are a very alarming reality of our times. Changing our habits to help address and fix these serious problems is an action we all must now accept and embrace. ‘Action Heroes’ is a CCA that intends to teach students the immediate actions they can take to ‘save our planet’. By using the school site as a case study, ‘Action Heroes’ will put strategies into place that will intend to change the school’s ‘bad’ habits into ‘green’ habits.”
Senior Art
Open to year 11s and Year 12s for art activities outside curriculum demands.
School Magazine
The School Yearbook CCA is responsible for the production of the Annual AISS Yearbook. Students involved in the entire publishing process and have the opportunity to develop their editing and graphic design skills using Photoshop.
Schools 4 Schools - Nepal
Following on from the 2007 Nepal Schools to Schools Community and Service program, the 2008 program will further the communications and relationships with schools in the Solokumbu region of Nepal. The projects founder, Ms Ruth Luthi, envisaged a long-term project which encouraged community and service understanding and fund-raising for needy schools in Nepal. Students involved are given the opportunity to trek for a week in Nepal in November to work with the students and staff in the project schools. Throughout the year, various initiatives will be set up by students to further the partnerships between AISS and our Nepal project schools. Interested students will be interviewed and fully briefed on the skills and fitness level required to participate in the CCA. Please note that a good level of fitness is necessary to join the trek in November. This CCA is open to members from the Senior School only.
Student Representative Council
The SRC makes a valuable contribution to the way our School functions as a community. We meet once a week to put forward and discuss the views of the wider school community. The SRC offers a range of opportunities designed to provide leadership and participation for its members.
Tournament of Minds - Finalists Only
Tournament of Minds is a challenging and inspiring competition for those students who are creative and lateral thinkers and excellent team workers. Talent or skill in drama, presentation, problem solving, art and creative work are valuable for this activity. AISS competes against other schools to attempt problems in areas such as Social Science, Maths/Science or Social Science.
Warhammer
The aim of every person who plays Warhammer 40,000 is to pit their force of miniatures against other players across war-torn futuristic battlefields. Win or lose, all battles are entertaining challenges in which you try to out-think and out-play your opponent, taking advantage of what good luck comes your way, but ultimately relying upon sound tactics to win the day.
To start down the road of enjoying this exciting game and hobby, you'll need a few things! First, and most importantly, you'll need an army and this CCA will help you with the creative side of designing your army. Please note you must supply your own figures and choice of paint in order for each army to be individualized.
