Mother Tongue Program

At the Australian International School, our extensive Mother Tongue Program is offered in all languages from Prep to Year 12, supporting our diverse community of over 50 nationalities.

If a student wishes to learn his/her mother tongue, and it is a language currently not being taught here at AIS, then we will seek a tutor of the highest calibre, in order for that AIS student to be immersed in the language and culture of his/her origins.

Mother Tongue in Elementary (Prep - Year 5)

In elementary, the Mother Tongue Program is offered in any language requested. Students take 10 classes per term, once a week, after school hours. To ensure our students are challenged and instructed at the appropriate proficiency levels, our elementary Mother Tongue classes are separated into Lower and Upper Elementary groups.

Mother Tongue in Secondary (Years 6 - 12)

In secondary, Korean and Mandarin, our two most popular mother tongue languages, are included in the students' tuition fees. These lessons are conducted within the curriculum to achieve maximum language immersion.

For all other languages, students take 18 classes each term, twice a week, after school hours. To ensure our students from Years 6 to 12 are challenged and instructed at the appropriate proficiency level, Mother Tongue classes in secondary are separated by age groups.

Spanish

Spanish is taken for two to four standard-length lessons per week by highly experienced and qualified teachers.

Spanish speaking students also take their language exams in their own language at the same level as English-speaking students, providing excellent continuity and readiness for higher education either in their own country or elsewhere, as all students are also required to study English.

Spanish Ab Initio is offered at the IBDP level.

Korean

Korean is taken for four standard-length lessons per week by highly experienced and qualified teachers.

Korean-speaking students also take their language exams in their own language at the same level as English-speaking students, providing excellent continuity and readiness for higher education either in their own country or elsewhere, as all students are also required to study English.
