MUSIC - Mr Simon Hughes

ANZAC Day 2014

Once again an AIS Choir provided Music for the Dawn Service at the Kranji War Memorial Cemetery. This, the 99th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli was a very moving service. This was the 20th Year that our school has provided a Choir to sing at the Dawn Service at Kranji and is the School’s oldest tradition.

This year the choir was made up of students form Ms McKerrow’s Chamber Vocal Ensemble in the Upper Elementary School and students from Mrs Winton’s Lower Secondary Choir.

The Choir sang In Flander’s Field, a poem by John MCCrae a WWI Canadian seviceman, and both the New Zealand and Australian National anthems. The students were prepared by Ms McKerrow and Mrs Winton and accompanied by Mrs Prins on the piano. The choir was stunning, receiving many congratulations from the various guests and dignitaries who were in attendance.
As well as the Dawn Service the Music Department was involved in five other services throughout the week. These were a Lower Elementary Service, two Upper Elementary services, a Secondary School Service and a short staff reflection at briefing on Friday afternoon.

I would like to specially thank our Music Assistants Mrs Merten and Mrs Davis who worked on the logistics for our trip out to Kranji this morning and the rest of the Music Department who supported or performed during the week. Mr Elliott and Joel Bulow are also to be congratulated for their wonderful performances of the Last Post and Rousse at the various events.

Annual Ensemble Evening Wednesday, 4 June

The AIS Music Department will host its Annual Ensemble Evening on Wednesday, 4 June.   Our Music Ensembles (with the exception of Lower Elementary groups) will perform in this concert held at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Concert Hall, located on the campus of the National University of Singapore.

More details about this event will be published in the following weeks, but at this stage I would like to ask that you keep Sunday, 1 June free for any student who is involved in this event, as this will be our Weekend rehearsal day.

On Wednesday, 4 June students will be bused to the venue throughout the day for rehearsals followed by the concert in the evening.

Concordis in Week 2

In preparation for the Annual Ensemble Evening, Concordis rehearsed on the afternoon of the pupil free day this week. Despite parent-teacher interviews and a day off for students we had 90% attendance. I was very proud of all of our students playing some very challenging repertoire with skill and a positive attitude.

IGCSE Music Professional Development

Ms Manskey and I were lucky enough to attend a two-day Cambridge Intermediate IGCSE Music course at Asia Pacific International School in Kuala Lumpur last week. The course was hosted by Mathew Rudd, one of the designers of the Cambridge IGCSE Music syllabus and the head marker for both the listening and performance components of the course.

This course was the first Cambridge IGCSE Music training course to be held in Asia, and the turnout was great, with more than 15 teachers from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, China, South Korea and Japan. We looked at the syllabus in great detail and worked through each component of the course. This included teaching tips, marking advice and coursework procedures. There was a lot of sharing of experience from many teachers with various backgrounds and teaching approaches.

Exam Results

Congratulations to the following student for their excellent Music exam results. Exams can be a very effective way to set performance goals and help students to improve their technical skills.

We are pleased to announce the following result - Isabella Johnson, Violin ABRSM Grade 3 - Merit.  Congratulations Isabella.
