Message from AIS Principal, Dr Nick Miller

Dear Parents,

Two years ago, AIS began a critical friend review with Archie McGlynn, former Chief Inspector of Schools for Scotland and David Coles.  Archie and David are returning to AIS next week to meet with a variety of staff and students to review our progress since their last visit in 2013.  The findings of the review will help to inform the School’s next Strategic Plan for the period 2014 - 2016.   We look forward to welcoming Archie and David back to our classrooms and value their knowledge and support in continuing to make improvements at AIS.

Our Careers Department have once again created an outstanding program of speakers, seminars and workshops for upper Secondary students, as part of the annual AIS Careers Day which will take place on Monday, 5 May.    The Careers Day provides an opportunity for our more senior students to not only speak to universities from Singapore and further afield, but also gives them access to representatives from the business world, and a chance to engage their thoughts and efforts towards what they want to achieve after school.  Thank you to Rhonda Vink and Beverley Hampson-Froud, from our Careers Department, for putting this together.

Looking forward to Week 5 I am delighted to welcome Music education expert, Richard Gill, to AIS.  Richard is one of Australia’s most admired conductors and is internationally respected as a Music educator.  During his visit he will work with our students and staff developing creative ideas and sharing his expertise.  There will also be an opportunity for parents to meet Richard on Thursday, 15 May at an evening event in the Senior Library dedicated to discussion on the impact of Music on a child’s imagination and creativity.  It promises to be a very interesting evening.  Please RSVP to if you wish to attend.

Congratulations are in order for Year 8 students, Noah Tomich and Tom Killingback, from AIS TV CCA, for their success at the Singapore International Student Film Festival 2014 last week. The boys were awarded first place in their Video Art category.  Please take some time to watch their film, The Wild Side, and read more about the festival in the Secondary School page of this Newsletter.

Finally, I had the pleasure of attending the ANZA Ball on Saturday evening where some of our very talented Music students delivered a confident and professional performance of Adele’s hit, Make You Feel My Love, on the main stage.   Our Chamber Ensemble also entertained guests as they arrived for the event.  It was a very proud moment for me and a wonderful demonstration of the kind of students and talent we have in our community.    Congratulations to all the students and staff involved in those performances.

I wish you a restful weekend.
