Music Department Visit: Richard Gill OAM

The Music Department have had a wonderful week with Richard Gill who has been inspirational to us all. There will be a more substantial write up of events with Richard in next week’s Newsletter.  On Thursday evening we had a great Parent Event with Richard in the Senior Library. It was a very proud moment to be able to stand before our school leadership and parents and introduce one of Australia’s true ‘national treasures’.

Our Year 11 and 12 Elective Music Students performed excerpts from Miserere mei, Deus composed by Italian composer Allegri – in the 1630s. This is a very high level choral repertoire and our students were amazing. Richard Gill was so impressed at the rehearsal that he decided to sing with the choir.

The music was originally written to be performed only in the Sistine Chapel in Rome for sacred services during Easter and it was forbidden by the Pope to write the music down. The reason we know of its existence is that a 14 year old Mozart, on a visit to Rome, heard it being performed in the Sistine Chapel and went home and transcribed it from memory!

I will write more about how Richard worked with both our staff and students in future Newsletters, however, the main focus was how we inspire children to be more creative with their own compositions. The reason we analyse and sing and play with children is to give them the tools they need for creativity.

Our Music Department are the most experienced, passionate and professional music educators I have ever worked with and yet, throughout the week working with Richard, we have all been talking and reflecting on our own practice and how we can
improve it.

I would like to thank Dr Owens and the Senior Leadership teams from Elementary and Secondary for facilitating Richards visit.
