Welcome to the Junior School at the Australian International School Singapore – a magical and enchanting place not only for children in their early years of schooling but also for their parents and teachers. Moving your children away from their extended family, friends and the familiar environment of their current school or preschool can be a most stressful and anxious time. Here you will find a ‘home away from home’, a school with a wonderful atmosphere and energy where a strong sense of community and a feeling of belonging are created and nurtured for all.
Central to life in the Junior School is a passion for teaching and learning. We are committed to providing our children with a rich, significant and relevant curriculum essential to effective living and life-long learning in today’s increasingly complex, technological and global society. We recognise that each child is special and unique, with their own individual needs, abilities, talents, preferred ways of doing things and personal ways of making sense of their world. At the same time, we also acknowledge that all children have much in common – they have a natural curiosity to learn, to explore their surroundings and to solve problems. Our program takes into account the needs of students of differing abilities and backgrounds and seeks to provide for every child an enriching school experience that harnesses their intrinsic motivation and encourages them to aspire to achieve academic excellence and their personal best in all areas of endeavour.
We believe that children learn most effectively when they can see that what they are learning is personally relevant, are able to experiment with real materials, are given myriad opportunities to apply what they learn and are encouraged to monitor their own progress to know the pleasure and satisfaction of personal accomplishment. It is for this reason that we have adopted a comprehensive inquiry based curriculum, the Primary Years Programme (PYP), that provides all students with the opportunities to develop the skills that will enable them to become independent, reflective citizens of the future. We aim to promote in every child the development of problem-solving strategies, initiative and a range of critical and creative thinking skills. We also strive to ensure that every child develops a sound grasp of the basic skills of literacy and numeracy, allowing them to conduct meaningful research, to communicate effectively and to participate productively in society.
Our dedicated and professional team of teachers and teachers’ aides recognises that it is a privilege to be entrusted with the care and education of young children in these critical, formative years of their lives. As a team, we are committed to providing a dynamic, stimulating and challenging education in a warm and supportive environment in which the contribution of every child and family is appreciated and valued. We are also committed to ensuring that, as a staff, we too are life-long learners who are constantly striving to improve our skills and practices for the benefit of our students.
We invite you to take the opportunity to visit our school and to experience for yourselves the warmth of our welcome and the excitement surrounding our imminent move to our new world-class, purpose-built facilities. Once finished, they will be the envy of Early Childhood educators around the world. It is a thrilling time to be part of the AISS family!
