2011 Nobel Laureate for Medicine Professor Bruce A. Beutler visited us at the Australian International School (AIS) yesterday to participate in a dialogue and a roundtable discussion with the school’s Secondary students.
The second of three international speaker sessions, Professor Beutler discussed his passion for immunology research and shared his personal journey to success.
Professor Beutler is recognised for discovering an important family of receptors that allow mammals to sense infections when they occur. He currently serves as the Director of the Center for the Genetics of Host Defense at UT Southwestern Medical Center and continues to be an influential figure in the field of immunology.
In the AIS Coral Dixon Theatre, Professor Beutler took questions on the topic of “The global struggle against infectious diseases” in front of an audience of 260 AIS Secondary students, parents and special guests.
Following the morning session, Professor Beutler joined a group of 30 AIS biology students, science teachers and parents for an in depth discussion designed to inspire the students’ studies.
“I hope that from today’s session, the students will understand that it is important that they find their passion in life but also to work hard to achieve their goals,” said Professor Beutler. “It was a pleasure interacting with such an enthusiastic group of students and I encourage them to pursue their interests and embark on their personal journeys to success."
“We are honoured to host Professor Beutler at the school, and I am especially appreciative of him for sharing not only a background of his incredible work, but also his childhood influences that brought him to his success and for reminding us to never underestimate the value of hard work,” said AIS Head of Secondary School Fiona Johnston. “His message is significant to our students as they travel down the road toward their future careers. Both Nobel Laureates during their visits have been shining examples of pursuing your passion, hard work and determination. Those values coincide with what AIS believes in – enabling our students to realise their potential through exceptional opportunities.”
The event is hosted in partnership with the International Peace Foundation’s (IPF) 5th ASEAN event series, “Bridges – Dialogues Toward a Culture of Peace”. The next session in this distinguished international speaker series with Nobel Laureate for Peace Dr Mohamed ElBaradei who will discuss global equity and security will be held on 12 February.
