AIS Celebrates SG50 Through Vibrant Arts Program

Published by Wai Yan Yip

In collaboration with the Australian High Commission's (AHC) '50 Bridges' program, the Australian International School was the receipient of the work of five professional street artists, who have created beautiful wall murals at different sites across the AIS campus.

Australian artists Matt Adnate, Regan Tamanui or HA-HA, Mike Makatron and Yvette Vexta, and Singaporean artist Trase1, are from a larger group of individual artists invited by the AHC to create unique artworks across Singapore's heartlands in celebration of Singapore's 50th birthday and 50 years of diplomatic relations with Australia.

Each artist used his or her own style to produce impressive, large-scale pieces of public art featuring various Australian and Singaporean-inspired motifs, including Makatron's interpretation of the Merlion and AIS shark mascot, Adnate's aboriginal child, HA-HA's stencil portraits of AIS students and Australian animals, Vexta's wall painting of a pair of Asian glossy starling birds and Trase1's colorful wall mural of a child pouring rainbow colours from a watering can.

HA-HA also spent one month at AIS for an in-school residency program, during which he worked closely with AIS visual arts students on stencilling and spray painting self-portraits.

Participating in the '50 Bridges' arts program is reflective of the dynamic, multicutural AIS community - one that is globally focused, distinctly Australian. To find out more about the artists and the '50 Bridges' program, click here.
