AIS Technology Department Hosts the 4th Annual Cake Baking Competition
The Technology Department held it’s 4th annual Cake Baking Competition! This year, the theme was ‘Iconic Singapore’, which was a fitting choice given the images and tastes that are unique to us here in Singapore.
The entries prepared ranged from shop houses, durian-shaped cakes, pandan-flavoured cupcakes, flags, tourist favourites such as the Supertree, Marina Bay Sands, the Flyer and Universal Studios and local favourites such as a mooncake with pineapple filling, a tray of ‘chicken rice and soup’, orchids and hibiscus flowers.
The students excelled themselves with their ideas and workmanship, the judges were very impressed by the level of quality displayed in the entries. Our Guest Judge was Cheryl Koh, Head Pastry Chef at Les Amis and Tarte Singapore, ably assisted by our resident judges Fiona Johnston and Ardene Mandziy. They tasted and analysed their way through the entries as they considered the criteria they were looking for in the cakes. This year we also included a category for Staff, which was well supported.
Our Year 6-8, 1st and 2nd prize winners have been invited to spend a morning with the team at Tarte kitchen, assisting to make and decorate a variety of pastries and tarts and our Year 9-10 winners will spend a session in the Les Amis French Restaurant kitchen during a meal service. We’re so grateful to Cheryl for offering these fantastic experiences to our winners as they will give them a glimpse into a potential career path.
The winners were:
Yr 6-8: 1st - Stuart Howarth (Yr 8) with his ‘chicken rice platter’, 2nd - Georgie Mandziy (Yr 7) with her Durian cake, 3rd - Alexandra Adamson (Yr 7) with her Shophouses
