As part of the Mentors and Inventors program, Nicola Barr visited AIS this week to speak to students about her journey towards becoming the first Great Western Sydney 2016 AFL Women’s Draft Player.

Nicola studied at AIS from Prep to Year 6 and throughout her time at the school she consistently proved her sportsmanship; throwing herself in to athletics, cross country, basketball and soccer. Nicola even became Lachlan House Captain in Year 5, bringing home the House Cup at the end of the year. However, it wasn’t until she was in Year 10 back in Australia that Nicola first tried her hand at AFL and she hasn’t looked back since.

Over the last two days, Nicola gave inspirational talks to our Secondary and Upper Elementary students highlighting her determination to succeed in AFLW and the resilience she has been able to build upon through sport. Nicola also spoke to a smaller group of 28 Upper Elementary School Leaders; focusing on leadership and being a positive role model. As a player in the inaugural AFLW league, Nicola is a game changer and a fantastic female sporting role model. Her advice to our students was to “always do what makes you happy, put 100% into everything you do and the results will follow”.

Jazz Davies, AIS Sports Captain, said of Nicola’s visit “Nicola Barr taught us the importance of courage, believing in and trusting yourself, and taking risks. Most importantly, she shared her best advice: to put 100% of effort into everything you’re doing, and to be present in that moment. Her passion and drive was inspiring to everyone and I’m excited to continue following Nicola’s journey”.

Elementary and Secondary students also had the opportunity to be coached by Nicola after school. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their skills and technique by playing a six-aside match with a professional AFL player.

Referencing her Elementary years at the school, Nicola said that her “time at AIS has played a big part of who [she] is today”. We incredibly proud of her and wish her the best in the upcoming season next year!
