The Benefits Of Music In Education

The benefits of music when it comes to stimulating a child’s brain development has long been acknowledged. Musical education helps students improve cognitive ability and language skills, can teach discipline and relieve stress, and also help people connect with each other. At AIS, music is a cornerstone of our holistic approach to education. From their first days in the early years until they graduate from AIS, your child will embark on a progressive musical journey that will prepare them to enjoy, participate or work in the arts. All students from Early Years through to Year 8 in our Secondary School participate in music as part of their academic program, students can then choose to continue their musical education right through their IBDP.

Our passionate specialist teachers deliver personalised musical programs to promote the highest standards of artistic excellence that enable your child to become an accomplished musician. With dedicated programs covering 21 instruments and extensive choir and voice opportunities, our students have every opportunity to participate. For those who find their passion in music, we also offer 16 Music Ensembles from Elementary School and beyond. Participation in an Ensemble is an essential part of a young player’s development. Playing or singing together not only improves musical skills, but also involves the students socially, promotes teamwork and contributes to the development of their emotional intelligence. All students learning instruments at AIS are encouraged to participate in at least one Music Ensemble.

Our students begin their musical education in Early Years supported by the Orff approach. This combines music, movement, drama and speech into play-based learning for our Early Years students. This child-centred way of learning treats music as a basic system like language and believes that just as every child can learn language without formal instruction, they can also learn music through a gentle and friendly approach.

Our highly qualified Early Years teachers create a music learning environment that is similar to a child’s world of play, allowing them to feel comfortable learning new instrumental or abstract musical skills without feeling evaluated or judged. We encourage our Early Years students to enjoy making music as individuals as well as in groups, without feeling the pressure of performing that is often in tandem with music. Children realise the joys of group coordination and cohesion, and every child is treated equally regardless of their musical ability.

From Elementary School onwards, students can participate in the Vocal and Instrumental Music Program, with lesson times are organised during the school day between the Instrumental Teacher and the students at a mutually convenient time.

Here at AIS, we celebrate our musical talent throughout the year with events ranging from school performances, charity events and Christmas carols through to the pinnacle of our music calendar, the Annual Music Ensemble Evening. With students preparing for months ahead of the evening, the night brings together singers and instrumentalists from the AIS Upper Elementary and Secondary School, who perform a range of music styles, including vocal performances from four choirs as well as performances by the soul band, piano concerto, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, chamber ensemble and strings quartet.

We are proud of our musicians’ achievements and welcome the opportunity to inspire your child.
