The AIS Elementary School curriculum follows the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP). The PYP recognises that development and learning are interrelated. Your child will develop knowledge, skills, concepts, and attitudes which are relevant, engaging and challenging across subject areas.
“To be truly educated a student must also make connections across the disciplines, discover ways to integrate the separate subjects, and ultimately relate what they learn to life”.
It is also an expectation that action will be a result of the learning process.
The Elementary School curriculum is mapped to the Australian Curriculum in Mathematics, Language, Science, History, Geography, Music, Visual Arts and PE.
The Learner Profile – Developing Character
The heart of learning at AIS is the development of the attributes of the IB learner profile: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. These capacities and responsibilities go beyond intellectual development and academic success. They imply a commitment to help all members of the School community learn to respect themselves, others and the world around them.
The Elementary School at AIS comprises students from Prep to Year 5. Lower Elementary comprises three year levels - Preparatory, Year 1 and Year 2. Upper Elementary offers a wide range of learning opportunities within the final three years of the PYP for children in Years 3, 4 and 5.
The Elementary School structure allows for continuity of the learning program across these important foundational years of schooling.
In addition to developing proficiency in subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Technology and Humanities with their classroom teacher, your child will also spend time with a range of expert teachers throughout their school week.
These include:
- Physical education x 2 periods
- Music x 2 periods
- Visual Arts x 2 periods
- Library x 1 period
- Mandarin x 5 periods
These specialist lessons are delivered in dedicated spaces within the school, or are integrated into the classroom.
