In recent years, we have been focusing on developing and nurturing Maths skills in the Elementary school. Our approach has developed over the last three years as part of the “AIS Maths Project” with our mentor Professor Peter Sullivan. Professor Sullivan is a senior Mathematics lecturer at Monash University and is the chief author of the Australian Mathematics Curriculum. At the centre of our approach was the inquiry based approach to Mathematics.

The outcomes of the 2017 NAPLAN results, particularly for Elementary serve as a pleasing validation of the Maths Project. equal to expected growth in Numeracy. This year, 86.7% of AIS students made greater than or equal to expected growth in Numeracy.

At AIS we are committed to ensuring our students have the opportunities to achieve their full potential and one way in which we can measure our success in this is through the administration of testing like The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). The NAPLAN test forms an important part of our assessment model and allows us to measure year on year growth as well as consider comparative data from students in ‘like schools’ and states in Australia. In Elementary the Year 3 and Year 5 classes were tested and in Secondary, Year 7 and Year 9.
