The AIS Teaching and Learning Explored Series of Parent Workshops is an initiative that was introduced in 2015 with the aim of giving our parents a deeper understanding into the teaching and learning philosophies of the school. They are designed to explain why certain concepts and subjects are taught in a particular way and how this fits into the wider curriculums that we follow, and also, importantly, to provide parents with the tools to support this learning at home. These are very practical sessions, with a great deal of parent engagement and interactions.

A whole range of workshops have taken place over the past two years, covering topics such as Positive Education, The Construction of Knowledge, Toolkits for Academic Success, Cyber Safety, Learning to Read and the Reggio Emilia Philosophy.

This week has seen the first Teaching and Learning Event of Semester 2 take place – ‘Learning to be a Mathematician’ – which was a session for Elementary School parents to help them understand how students develop a sense of numbers, what is meant by number fluency, using efficient strategies for solving mathematical problems and how parents can help at home. It was a great success with more than 70 people turning up to hear from Teacher Luc McKay, our Elementary School Numeracy Co-ordinator. Here is some of the feedback that we received from parents:

"Really informative session – thank you. The interactive activities really demonstrated the points being taught."

"I will now encourage my daughter to have a go - it's not about the answer, it's about how you try!"

"It really reassured me about the teaching strategies being used at AIS."
