Best-selling Author James Kerr Shares Stories from His Book Legacy

Published by Radhika Puri

James Kerr, a sports writer shared insights and stories from his recent best-seller, Legacy: What the All Blacks Can Teach Us About the Business of Life with competitive sports teams at AIS. Kerr’s book on the rugby team from New Zealand covers the cultural and behavioural expectations that helped All Blacks become one of the most successful sporting teams in the world.

In his talk, Kerr spoke to students at AIS about the defining characteristics of the All Blacks Humility, Excellence and Respect, and how these values have been pivotal to the team’s success. One of the better known sporting traditions by the team is a practice called “Sweeping the Sheds” when some of the biggest names in rugby history tidy up the dressing room after a game displaying the belief that champions are not above any task.

Kerr ended the talk by leaving students with two questions that the All Blacks ask themselves on and off the field; What can you contribute to the team? What are you prepared to put aside to get there? says Justin Teves, head of sport at AIS, "The All Blacks beliefs and culture resonated with all the things that we as a department were looking to instill in our athletes. Selflessness, commitment and playing for not just yourself but for the school and for all those who have worn the jersey and for those yet to pull on the jersey."
