IGCSE Singapore Guide: All You Must Know

Are you thinking of continuing your studies by pursuing the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)?

If it is an option you’re looking to explore, you might want to learn more details about it – from the subjects offered to what you can expect after graduating.

In Singapore, many students are selecting the IGCSE as it is a pathway to higher education or professional studies, whether in the country itself or overseas.

On top of that, the skills, such as critical thinking and independent learning, that they acquire throughout their study journey set them up for success in the future.

In this article, we will go through the structure of IGCSE, the subjects offered and the pathways you can enter at the end of the qualification.

What Is The IGCSE?

The IGCSE is a globally recognised curriculum offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Designed for students between the ages of 14 to 16, it serves as a comprehensive and rigorous program that helps build a strong foundation across various subjects as well as develop critical thinking, problem-solving and independent learning.

The Structure Of The IGCSE

The IGCSE assessments include written, oral, coursework and practical components, so that students are given the chance to exhibit their learning abilities.

While there is the usual linear journey of having assessments at the end of the two-year programme, students can also opt for a modular route. This means breaking your study journey into units with an exam at the end of each unit, when you feel more prepared and ready.

Regardless of the selected route, the exams take the same amount of time and teachers spend the same amount of time teaching.

The IGCSE Subjects Offered

With over 70 subjects in various combinations including more than 30 languages, science subjects, humanities as well as those that focus on creative, technical and vocational skills, students will be able to select based on their individual requirements for further studies.

Language subjects include:

– English

– Spanish

– German

– Chinese (Mandarin)

Sciences include:

– Biology

– Chemistry

– Physics

Humanities subjects include:

– Geography

– History

– Economics

– Music

In addition, other subjects including accounting and computer science can be taken. But it will vary from school to school if they are on offer.

It is common for students to choose between five to nine subjects, depending on their specific future plans and areas of interest.

For example, if the student is looking to pursue a science-based programme in the future, it would be a good idea to prioritise Science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Having said that, if one is unsure about specific plans, it helps to choose a wide variety of subjects such as English, Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies and perhaps a Foreign Language as being bilingual gives an advantage in our globalised world.

As different schools offer different subjects, it is best to check with them first so you can make an informed decision.
