IB PYP Curriculum Features

The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) is not only what is taught, but how it’s taught.

  • Inquiry, as the leading pedagogical approach of the PYP, is recognised as allowing students to be actively involved in their own learning and to take responsibility for that learning.
  • Guided Inquiry allows your child’s understanding of the world to develop in a manner and at a rate that is unique to them.
  • Explicit teaching, practice and consolidation to mastery is evident in all learning spaces.

IB PYP Subjects

The IB PYP covers six subject areas: Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, and Personal, Social and Physical Education. The IB PYP gives students an advantage by developing key skills, such as critical thinking, by connecting learning to real‑world applications.

See how AIS delivers these subjects on our Elementary Curriculum page.

How is the IB PYP Graded or Assessed?

The IB PYP utilises a comprehensive assessment framework that focuses on evaluating students’ understanding, skills, and attitudes. Assessment in IB PYP is criterion-referenced, meaning students’ achievements are measured against predetermined criteria rather than being compared to their peers.

Assessment methods in IB PYP include oral assessment tasks, teacher observations, student portfolios, projects, tests, student lead presentations, and collaborative work. The program encourages students to self-assess and reflect on their learning progress.

The PYP Exhibition

The PYP Exhibition is the culminating project of the IB Primary Years Programme. In Year 5, students undertake an extended, collaborative inquiry into a real-world issue of significance.

During the PYP Exhibition, students:

  • Identify a real issue they want to explore
  • Conduct in-depth research using primary and secondary sources
  • Take action to make a difference in their community
  • Present their findings to parents, teachers, and peers

IB PYP Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IB Primary Years Programme?

The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an inquiry-based educational framework for children aged 3-12. Developed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the PYP focuses on developing the whole child through transdisciplinary learning that connects subjects to real-world issues. At AIS Singapore, an authorised IB World School since 2007, the PYP develops critical thinking, creativity, and international mindedness.

What is the age range for IB PYP students?

The IB PYP is designed for students aged 3 to 12. At AIS Singapore, this covers children from Prep (age 5) through to Year 5 (age 10-11). The programme provides a developmentally appropriate curriculum that builds foundations for lifelong learning.

Is the IB PYP recognised internationally?

Yes. The IB Primary Years Programme is recognised and respected by schools and educators worldwide. Over 1,900 schools in more than 100 countries offer the PYP. Students can transfer between IB World Schools globally, making it ideal for internationally mobile families.

How is the IB PYP different from traditional education?

The IB PYP uses inquiry-based learning rather than rote memorisation. Students explore concepts through questions and investigation, connecting learning across subject areas. The programme develops skills alongside knowledge, focusing on how to learn rather than just what to learn. Assessment is ongoing and formative rather than exam-focused.

What is the IB Learner Profile?

The IB Learner Profile describes ten attributes that IB students strive to develop: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced, and Reflective. These qualities guide learning and personal development throughout a student’s IB education.

What is the PYP Exhibition?

Note: Only include if PYP Exhibition is part of AIS IB PYP. Confirm with AIS.

The PYP Exhibition is the culminating project of the IB Primary Years Programme. In Year 5, students undertake an extended collaborative inquiry into a real-world issue of personal significance. They conduct research, take action, and present their findings to the school community. The Exhibition demonstrates students’ ability to apply their learning independently.

How are IB PYP students assessed?

IB PYP assessment is ongoing and focuses on how students apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful ways rather than on grades.

Teachers use formative assessments such as check-ins with students to guide learning and summative assessments such as projects and presentations to evaluate understanding. Students reflect on their own learning through portfolios and self-assessment. There are no formal IB exams in the PYP but ongoing checks to ensure learning. Students will receive reports to track their progress.

What programme follows IB PYP at AIS?

After completing Year 5, AIS students move into Years 6-8 with a standards-based curriculum that prepares them for the Cambridge IGCSE in Years 9-10. Following IGCSE, students choose from three senior pathways: the IB Diploma Programme, the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC), or the IB Courses+ which is underpinned but the Australian International School High School Diploma accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
