The Australian International School’s Community Contributes to Red Cross Through Annual Blood Drive

The Australian International School (AIS) demonstrated its dedication by organising the third annual Blood Drive on Friday, 11 August 2023, held in the Small Gym. This year we had 37 donors, among them were 4 individuals with rare blood types!

The Secondary School Community Service Coordinator, Sarah Barr, shares her thoughts from the day “Students, staff and parents came together to contribute to the cause. It was great to see many first-timers who said they would definitely donate again”

Empowering Students: The Impact of Blood Drives

Blood drives offer more than just a chance to donate; at AIS we believe they empower students by instilling values of empathy and responsibility. Through participating, students actively engage in aiding those in need, showcasing the school community’s compassion.

Significance in the Local Context

In Singapore, blood drives carry exceptional importance. They ensure a stable supply of blood for medical treatments and emergencies, directly affecting the well-being of individuals in our community.

In Singapore, the demand for blood remains constant, with an astonishing requirement of 15 units of blood utilised every single hour. This annual necessity reaches a staggering 120,000 units to fulfil the transfusion needs of patients. To put this into perspective, more than 400 units of blood are required on a daily basis. Remarkably, the impact of blood donation is profound, as a single bag of blood has the potential to save not one, but three lives. Recognizing the importance of preparedness, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) diligently maintains a stockpile of blood that spans nine days. This strategic measure ensures an ample supply, especially during critical moments of emergency.
